"Gor," he said, "is the name of this world. In all the languages of this planet, the word means Home Stone, "he replied. "Simply that."

Welcome to a new world...
A world known as Counter Earth,
A world named Gor...
Gor is a series of books that were written by John Norman aka John Lange. The first book being released in 1966 by Bellantine Books. Since then Mr. Norman has written 26 books in the series based upon a world where men hold over all control and women obey. The "Gods" are a insect race known as Priest Kings and thier enemies are the Kurii.
Little did Mr. Norman know that roughly 30 years later his books would become the foundation for a role play enviroment for the masses. Now one can find "Goreans" in most any chat type forum. Being I use HalSoft the guidelines I will be using will deal with this chat.
Let me start off by stating these are my own opinions and views of the books, I suggest before you even think of becoming a member of the community you get copies of the books and read them for yourself. There is no better guide than the source itself.
You can find copies of the books at amazon.com, or through e-bay, or you can try going to a local used bookstore. I cannot stress enough how important reading the books will be for your adventure into this world.
Now you have hopefully gotten a copy of at least Tarnsman of Gor (the 1st book of the series) and read it, so you have a basic concept of what Gor is. Your still interested in rping on this world. Below I hope will be some helpful beginner tips that should help you in your process in fitting into the community within HalSoft.
1: First thing you will want to do is figure out the type of character you wish to portray. There are 5 basic classes to look at.
Free Men and Women (FM & FW accordingly) (this is broke down further by Castes which I will describe in more detail later.).
OutLaws (men and women that have no caste or city)
Panthers (FW or female slaves that choose to live within the forest outside the laws of the cities, the Panther is viewed as the lowest form of Outlaw.)
The Wagon People (These are Nomads that have thier own set culture)
and last the slave or kajira (f) or kajirus (m) (slaves are beasts or animals and have no say in anything that happens to them or around them. They are nothing more than property.) If you wish to be a slave it is highly suggested you start as a Free till you feel ready to wear someones collar as there is no such thing as a unowned slave in Gor and even with learning or observing in your info you will be subject to being captured or killed by any Master that finds you in a room.
There are also other races on the planet, the spider people, Kurii, Priest Kings to name a few, but honestly I have not seen any of them played correctly to date.
2: Do not just enter a room, go to observe and read the page first so you are aware of the rules for that site as they will vary from place to place.
3: If you really feel you have to put Gor in your info add either observing or learning. This is a standard for those new to the rp and should be used for no more than 30 days. It is assumed after 30 days one has a basic idea of what they are doing and how to carry themselves in a room.
4: Tho I personally as well as a growing number of those that rp in HalSoft do not agree with this, some still feel non-Gorean pages are to be viewed as "wildernesss" and as such any with Gor in thier info found on them are subject to kills and captures. My own view and as such the laws within my own city state non-Gorean pages are viewed as "off world" and no role playing should be done on them. This is a matter of respecting space, I will not allow a vampire to "feast" on my Gorean pages and thus out of respect I will not take my role play into thier homes.
Mentioning Vampires brings up another point. When in Gor you are Gorean, do not mix your rping groups. Example do not put Gor/Vamp/Wolf in your info. Also don't decide to rp 2 different roles at the same time, this is called dualing and when one is caught the standard policy is the person doing so is killed in all names they use (i.e. do not make up a Free persona then also makeup a slave one to rp at the same time.).
Now as you wander the pages you will come across what we refer to as "tags",
NRPR/NRZ/PKZ/PCZ
Below is a standard break down what these tags mean.
NKZ = No Kill Zone (No kills allowed on this page)
NCZ = No Capture Zone (No captures allowed on page)
NMZ = No Maim Zone (No maiming allowed on this page)
NRZ = No Raid Zone (No raiding the room)
PKZ = Patroled Kill Zone (This page allows kills when 1 or more Warriors of the location or in the event of the forest Panthers are present. In the absence of the said groups the pages tags revert to NKZ/NCZ.)
PCZ = Patroled Capture Zone (The same as PKZ but in regards to captures.)
These tags represent non player characters being present, ie city guards, sleens, or whatever is used to protect the location. These tags are offend refered to as "virtual guards".
NK/NC tags are generally found on learning pages, kennels and FW's chambers. However men who are not of the Warrior class may also be known to use them since the PK/PC tags revert to NK/NC when no Warrior is present.
These tags do NOT protect a slave however that is "unowned" There is no such thing as a unowned slave on Gor.

You will find in Gor there is alot of fighting and capturing that occurs (to much of it by my own personal views.)
However I suggest you know the standard practice used by most locations for doing this. As a Warrior, Panther, Slaver, Assassin or Outlaw odds are you will use it and if a slave you will need to know to avoid being captured.
Most commonly used at this time in HalSoft is what is refered to as T5 which is a speed combat style where you have to type 5 words per post. The killing blow being no sooner than the 5th post. You cannot do more than 1 action per post and your first post must state intent.
I have heard some say T3 is standard for capture however I see T5 used for both as common practice. T3 is the same as T5 except it is 3 words to a post 3 posts to kill.
When escaping or trying to you are required to use T5 or T3, but only need to do it in 2 posts without being stopped by your opponent.
a example of T5...

-Pulls out sword from sheath-
-Looks at (targets name) with intent to kill-
-charges (target) with great speed-
-Swings sword at (target) head-
-Watches blade slice through throat-
-Watches (target) head fall to ground-
-Wipes blade on corpses body-

Now keep in mind this is one sided, the target would be responding at the same time and it would be whoever typed fastest and had the best responces that would win in this situation.
Also keep in mind combat styles vary from place to place and T5 may or may not be what is used. There is also a turn style combat that some use as well.
Again look for rules for the site and read them to know before hand what you are dealing with, and if they are not posted then IM and ask someone. IM's are considered Out Of Character contact and no actions used in them are viewed as valid.
I strongly stress sitting in observe and reading the rules for the page you wish to enter, if no rules are present IM someone sitting there and ask questions, get safe passage granted before you just waltz in or you may find yourself dead or in someones collar.
These are standard guidelines, however not all sites go by the same laws.
