I was born, somewhere in the deeper Northern Forest. My mother, a lone panther, because of me... Had raised me instead of selling me off at a exchange point.
My younger years were spent learning the ways of the forest and how to survive in them. I grew quickly, into a stout young man, just over 4 ah-il tall and around 55 stone in weight.
At one point I was foolish and wandered where I shouldn't have gone and was captured by my mother's sister. I was kept for a few months only to finally be returned to where I had been born.
My mother walked upto me one day with a sad look in her face... I looked down on her silently, knowing she would speak when she felt she was ready... She took a deep breath then spoke to me.
My son, I have kept you from what is rightfuly yours for far to long. You do not belong in the forest as a man. They will hunt you and collar you. I am taking you with me to the exchange point tonight, and you will not be returning.
She continued to speak but I no longer heard what she was saying. I was being forced to leave the only family I knew I had and go live in something she called a city.
I started to argue with her about it. I didn't understand why I had to leave since I had been safe all this time with her. She looked at me hard, son... We have lived deep in the forest and moved around a great deal making sure no one found you.
I can't do that anymore I need to be with my sisters again. It is time you learned of the rest of the world. I will always be here and you will always have safe passage when in my home area, but I have to do this and you are not going to argue with me any further.
This is the last thing I am ever going to make you do ever again.
I was at a loss for words but knew by the look in her eyes and her body motions, the tone in her voice, she was set this was to be so I obeyed and went to collect the few things I owned.
That evening we set out down the path, I looked back one last time at the place I called home sighed deeply and followed her.
We got to the exchange point and I saw 3 men 2 had the big bird my mother had told me was a tarn and one was with a wagon, they all looked up and greeted my mother, she greeted each back and started about doing her business with them. I found a rock and sat on it remaining quiet watching what she was doing closely.
Finally the 2 with Tarns left and the man with the wagon walked over to me. "So this is the one you told me of," he said as we stared at each other, "You know he isn't going to have it easy, but I will do what you have asked. He will be taught the books and the skills of a builder. You will know where to find him."
The man extended me his hand, I looked at him then his hand, then my mother then back at him... I slowly took his hand and he pulled me up onto my feet as we shook. "Get on the wagon..." He glanced at my mother, she looked at me for a moment with tears in her eyes.. "He never was given a true name, I always called him Beast..."
He shook his head looking back at me. "We will call you..." I spoke up..."She said... My name.. Is Beast..." He looked at me pondering for a second then nodded, "if you so wish then aye your names is Beast, my name is Lathyas it is time we left."
I looked back at my mother, she stood there watching me holding back the hurt she was feeling, I could see in how she was holding herself this hurt her. "Safe paths mother, wherever I go know you and your sisters will always be welcome in my home. No matter what they have felt about me."
I then turned to this Lathyas and nodded... It was time to go I knew looking back wouldn't change whatever it was I was to face now.
We got on the wagon and started down the path. Lathyas started talking to me, telling me how he had a sister once, very proud and beautiful FW of the city, but she was to FC a man she did not like, he treated her like a slave when no one was around them and she loathed the man. So one night she crept off into the forest. She kept in touch, I found a note waiting at a exchange point that told me she was still alive and well.
Much later I met her at one of these points. We kept in touch, I keeping her informed what was going on, then on one trip she came with a small bundle in her arms... I thought it was a child to sell at first, come to find out it was a boy she had given birth to. She refused to let me take him then... She was a stubborn one my sister, she wanted to raise the boy herself even at the greater risks the forest would hold for him and for her as a lone panther usually finds herself in a collar.
But she did raise the boy... On one trip I saw this boy off in the trees, he looked over at me as he spoke, the boy had grown large and I had a feeling it was time to ask again.. This time she agreed and a date was set... Beast, a man does not live in the forest, he lives in cities, or wagons.. But he does not live with Panthers. You will learn my caste as my nephew this will not be a problem.
I just nodded my head listening to my... Uncle, trying to understand what he was saying...
We rode in silence for sometime, him looking at me from time to time and I lost in my thoughts about all he had told me.. Finally we came to a small city it was at the base of the great Thentis Mountains. This is home he said as he stopped the wagon and hopped down. I followed him and walked towards the gates that were now open, looking all around as I had never been in a city before.
He lead me to his home, where he took me in, showing me to what would be my room during my training.
The next few years I spent learning why Lathyas wanted to give me a name, often I was poked fun at for being named what slaves were refered to as. The ribbing and snide comments only made me stronger tho, I swore under my breath that they would see one day, then went back to my studying. My studies became my world, I learned quickly much to my Uncle's surprise and by the end of 2 years I was ready to work on my own.
His greatest concern now was that I for all I had been through, refused to fight. I would not lift a weapon and the only blade anyone ever saw on me was my sleen knife I had brought with me. "You have to learn nephew, it is how you will survive.." My Uncle said to me as we watched the sparring at the arena. I would watch silently observing moves and the fact that in the end always one man would have died.
"What point is learning something that in the end only one will remain standing? How does this deal with either man's survival to begin with? Nothing is gained that words could not have given them as well." I looked into my Uncle's eyes searching for answers, he had none... He patted me on my shoulder as we walked away once again... "My nephew," he said as we walked, "I have a gift for you, it is time you moved on with your life, I can teach you nothing more here."
We walked back to the house and he presented me with a scroll. "Open it Beast, it is yours now and all legal." I opened the scroll and read, it was the deed to a piece of land to the north, the location was actually in the Thentis Mountains, but over looked the Northern Forest. It would put me within 1 days travel of where I grew up... I smiled as I read. "Thank you Uncle, I will make you proud you will see." He nodded at me, "I will supply you with materials you need to build, I took the liberty of having Gabriel made ready as I figured you would want to fly over and check the land."
The thought of getting away with my Tarn brought a smile to my face, "Thank you Uncle, I will return this evening." With that I turned quickly, scroll still in hand and headed for my quarters to get the things I would need to start plotting how I would build my new home. I walked out to where Gabriel was waiting, patted him on his neck and climbed up on his great back... We flew for over an ahn when I spotted the location the map described, from this side of the mountains it looked like a sheer drop almost to the forest below, this meant I would need to carve out a tunnel to allow access to the forest.
Gabriel cried out and I laughed, pulling the straps for him to land. We came in on the other side of the peek, looking out I was impressed, for beyond the edge laid a lush valley. I started drawing out lines of what I wanted to build, making notes for the tunnels. It took Gabriel screaching for me to realize just how long I had been lost in my planning, the 3 moons could be seen rising, it was time to return to my Uncles.
I started building within the next week, my Uncle keeping his word and giving me the supplies I would need. During the construction I came across a red stone, it was the size of my fist and heart shaped. I picked it up and put it in my pocket for some reason. When the day was done and I had returned once more to my Uncles I showed him the stone... He looked at it, without touching it, "You have found your heartstone nephew, it is now time you named your city..." I nodded and took the stone, carfefully I etched into it 2 letters, SL... "I name my home Sheku Lina."
I have since built my city, My gates are always open to those that live around me. The Panthers in the forest always have safe passage as do the outlaws that live to the south of me. My Uncle brought a family member to my city, Willow, he had told her I was in need of a teacher as he knew in my heart I was more scribe than builder even tho I had learned my caste well and my city was proof of this. I hired a 1st sword in keeping my personal oath that I would never lift a blade to another and have since taken up training under Willow studying the scrolls seeking to learn more of the planet I call home.
I own 1 slave, angel_DBeast, she is my love slave and I have no desire or need for any others. I refuse to think about courting. My family that I am always learning more about each day keeps me busy enough as it is.
I have since relocated my mother, I searched her out at a exchange point. Now I, like my Uncle, see her at these places sharing what has happened to me over the years. She knows she is welcome in the city and has been known to visit now and then.
I purchased a mate for Garbriel and started breeding Tarns, soon this will become a business for me. I opened the Blackwine Cafe as well... My city grows and each day when I get up I look out from my balcony and smile with great pride at what I have accomplished.
